Joseph Robinette "Joe" Biden, Jr.

Name:
Joe Biden (Joseph Robinette "Joe" Biden, Jr.)

Position:
Senior Democratic United States Senator from Delaware.
He is both the 2008 Democratic Vice Presidentail nominee & re-elect candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Born:
November 20, 1942 in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Education:
Archmere Academy, 1961.

Undergraduate:
Biden graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965 with a Bachelor Of Arts degree in both History and Political Science.
He received his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law in 1968. His first year there he was accused of
plagiarizing pages of a law review article. He was allowed to retake the course. During this time, Biden received 5 student draft
deferments (dodged the draft because of being a college student) with the first in 1963 and the last in 1968. This was during the height of the Vietnam War.

Professional and Political Career:
Biden was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1969. Biden began practicing law in Wilmington, DE and was elected the the New
Castle County, County Council from 1970 to 1972. Biden won the 1972 Senate election by 3,162 votes. Biden has since
been elected to 5 additional terms.
Biden serves on the following committees in the 110 U.S. Congress.
* Committee on Foreign Relations (chairman)
* Committee on the Judiciary
* Subcommittee on Antitrust Competition Policy and Consumer Rights
* Subcommittee on Crime and Drugs (chairman)
* Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law
* Subcommittee on Immigrations, Border Security, and Refugees
* Subcommittee on Technology Terrorism and Homeland Security
* Caucus on International Narcotics Control (co-chair)
Biden has been the co-chairman of the NATO Observer Group in the Senate.

Addtional notes:
In 1968, Biden's draft status was reclassified by the Selective Service System as "not available" due to asthma he had as a
teenager.
Biden's wife and year old daughter were killed December 18, 1972 in an automobile accident. Biden almost resigned from the
Senate to be able to care for his 2 sons.
